September 01, 2025
Attention Business Owners: Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. While your Windows 10 PCs will continue to function, Microsoft will stop providing critical updates and technical assistance that protect and optimize your system's performance.
Why This Matters for Your Business
- Heightened Security Threats: Without ongoing updates, your devices become increasingly exposed to cyberattacks, malware, and viruses. Protecting your business data means upgrading to a supported operating system is essential.
- Software Compatibility Challenges: Many applications are designed to work seamlessly with the latest Windows versions. After support ends, you risk losing functionality or encountering software failures.
- Regulatory Compliance Risks: If your business handles sensitive information or adheres to strict regulations, running outdated software could lead to compliance violations and potential penalties.
What Are Your Next Steps?
Microsoft recommends upgrading to the latest Windows version before support ends. However, not all Windows 10 devices meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11. Attempting to upgrade incompatible PCs will result in error messages.
If your current PC isn't compatible with Windows 11, consider these options:
- Purchase a new PC that supports Windows 11
- Enroll in Extended Security Updates (ESU) for continued protection
- Switch to an alternative operating system like Linux
- Ignore the deadline and risk your business security (strongly discouraged!)
Before making any changes, always back up your important data to prevent loss during upgrades.
Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10
If upgrading immediately isn't feasible, Microsoft offers ESU as a temporary safeguard. Note this is a short-term fix, available only for one year after the October 2025 deadline.
To access ESU, you can pay a $30 fee or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Reward points. Alternatively, a free option requires enabling Windows Backup to sync your settings and files to OneDrive. Keep in mind, OneDrive's free 5 GB storage may require expansion for large data volumes.
Don't delay—register for ESU before the October 14 cutoff to keep your device protected.
